(Al Hartmann | The Salt Lake Tribune) Eight homeless people from Salt Lake City pose for a group photo at a graduation ceremony at Salt Lake Community College Tuesday, Feb. 6. The eight were provided housing and completed a Framing Assistant Training program at SLCC that trained them to help build homes. Students got certificates for training, their own tool belts and supplies, and interviews for jobs.
A pilot program to train homeless Salt Lake City residents in basic home construction and help them find jobs graduated its first crop of trainees Tuesday.
The program, sponsored by the city Department of Economic Development along with state and community agencies and construction industry leaders, gives apprentices up to six months of free housing and a month of intensive training.
